good morning thanks for joining us i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. president obama has declared new york and long island disaster areas because of the damage they've suffered from superstorm sandy live look at new jersey flooding is a big problem. so far 17 deaths are attributed to the storm. more than seven million up and down the east coast without power, 13 foot storm surge caused widespread flooding. tahman bradley in maryland with an update. >> reporter: along the east coast, signs of sandy's fury, lady liberty's torch out power outages spread, five million in the dark 1.5 million evacuated sandy made landfall along the new jersey coast, 80 mile per hour wind as and flooding high tides, rough surf battered the coastline. this morning entire sections of atlantic city are

underwater. >> people who decided to ride out the storm were left stranded. new jersey governor announced no rescue services until today. >> i cannot in good conscience send them in the dark given all the various hazards that would occur. >> reporter: new york city hit by 13 foot surge of seawater flooding the new ground zero memorial, subway stays and tunnels. -- stations and tunnels. >> reporter: in breezy point, queens, fire destroyed 50 homes. in manhattan, hundreds of patients at this hospital, including babies, had to be evacuated after a back-up generator failed. the city closed all tunnels and bridges, subway and bus service had already been shutdown new york stock exchange closed again today the first time weather has caused it to close for a second day since the 1800s. snow storms in swreufrt jury,

[ unintelligible ] they through in from hawaii, their connecting flight was cancelled. >> we had tsunami warnings in hawaii. i dealt with the evacuation of honolulu. >> reporter: earliest flight thursday they are making the most of their stay they plan to visit fish -- fisherman's wharf and the golden gate bridge. >> san francisco how bad can it be.

>> reporter: for others staying is not an option. the doctor has paints scheduled for chemotherapy. he flew -- has patients scheduled for chemotherapy therapy >> st. louis through denver, three hour layover and drive to massachusetts, 22 hours. >> logistical nightmare. >> it mess. i hope we are safe driving. >> reporter: ellen cannes wait for her flight -- can't wait for her flight tomorrow. >> yesterday i had to spend the whole day getting my meds. he i had to take care of running around because i was stuck. >> that was lilian kim reporting from sfo. terry mcsweeney at sfo has given us information there may be some hope that a few flights to the east coast out you of sfo may resume today.

get through the deep water. in this picture you can see a man standing by a flooded street in the city. you can just barely make him out there. the roads leading to atlantic city are cracked and water covered. here's another shot of southern manhattan, lower manhattan as they call it, this car in the chelsea district submerged. building in the same neighborhood had its facade torn off you can see the power of this storm. we'll continue to track sandy as damage mounts. katie marzullo is monitoring the latest video and live feeds. she will have a live report in 25 minutes. the city of san francisco planning a big victory celebration for the world champion giants tomorrow. crews started setting up where tomorrow's parade route ends the team arrived home from detroit yesterday after sweeping tigers, huge crowd

check out the golden gate bridge fog into the north bay valleys that's what your morning commute will look like. other than that dry a chance of rain for halloween coming up. nuisance fog for us, sandy now tropical storm deadly as we've been telling you, major headaches for travelers some who could be stranded at our local airports for days. terry mcsweeney is live at sfo. you were saying there is a glimmer of hope that some flights will be able to get outgoing back east? >> reporter: yeah, yesterday all 150 flights in and out of san francisco international to seven big airports back east were cancelled. this morning most have been cancelled but not all. video from yesterday the sign

greeting passengers yesterday and for the most part this morning. boston, baltimore, jfk, newark, philadelphia and two big airports in washington, d.c.. we are getting word there's problems with some flights in and out of pittsburgh as the storm moves in that direction. flights going into charlotte, north carolina may be stopped not because of problem at the airport because there are no rental cars and no hotel rooms available. the advice is contact your airline before you come to the airport. don't do it by phone because they are swamped, people saying 15, 20 minute wait they never did get to talk to anybody, go online. there's a slight chance there are flights getting out of san francisco international back to the east coast today situation improving somewhat. san jose airport announcing cancellations yesterday that may be the same today.

millions don't have electricity, flooding and wind making damage assessment difficult. latest from katie marzullo live in our newsroom. >> reporter: -- >> she is going to have an update in just a moment. i guess we'll go back to katie right now. there she is. >> reporter: thank you. i have an update on the rescue operation going on in new jersey now this is'/#=9bñ new jersey going on for hours, governor -- this is moonachie, new jersey going on for hours, governor christy saying it was not a levee it was a berm, 800 need to be rescued from a mobile home park is a live look at atlantic city, new jersey the center of the storm came ashore near there

that storm surge cutting off the city from the mainland anyone who did not evacuate was stranded. the storm has killed 17 people, up from 16 within the last hour. that does include a crew member of the ship hms bounty, 7 1/2 million people are without power, some 50 homes destroyed by a fire that is still raging in queens, new york. nearly 200 firefighters have been working to knock down those flames since they broke out last night. firefighters telling our affiliate there 25 people are trapped if the upstairs unit of an apartment building some rescues have to be carried out by here's one of the causes of the power problems, transformer blew in new york there are also power lines down everywhere. >> knew this was going to be a very dangerous storm, the storm has met our expectations extraordinary amount of water throughout lower manhattan there are trees down throughout the city, bad news

patient other hospitals last night when back-up generators at the hospital failed. hundreds of patients are being moved out. all eyes on the sky. new york city crane still precariously perched atop a highrise high winds toppled that crane and it has been dangling ever since at level below hundreds, evacuated and people in other buildings moved to lower floors, buildings nearby estimated that winds around 95 miles per hour at the time of the collapse. sandy flooded new york's brooklyn battery tunnel. the normally busy toll road connects manhattan with brooklyn, officials did shut it down holland tunnel as well. things are looking better this morning at sfo after sandy forced cancellation of thousands of flights nationwide. yesterday, all 150 flights to major airports back east were cancelled.

first light officials are getting a better grasp of how much damage it has caused so far. a much happier story you want an early start if you plan on heading downtown tomorrow for the world series championship parade, a million people are expected to attend. amy hollyfield is live at civic center plaza. they are recommending mass transit, right? >> reporter: yes they definitely are. a million people coming to see their giants this is where they will take the stage and greet their adoreing fans in civic center plaza, at fulton, facing the library, the team will be here tomorrow morning but some fans couldn't wait until then they wanted to see the players right away so they went to at&t park yesterday to great them as soon as they arrived home from detroit. those who waited got a little show. mvp sandoval showed off the

world series trophy to the crowd, which delighted them, of course. the team arrived home about 5:00 yesterday afternoon. it has been a whirlwind they say they've had little time for sleep. >> they are so special, you try to catch up events right now the boys are still probably a little numb we had a long night last night celebrating, we had a great time i think they got needed rest on the plane and we'll rest up a couple days and enjoy wednesday's parade. >> reporter: here's the route, the parade will start at the base of market at justin herman plaza. the team will make its way up market up to civic center plaza it starts at 11:00 in the morning. they are recommending public transportation even that is going to be crowded they say the 2010 world series parade celebration was the busiest day in bart's history.

noon and out at the coast, coast in the 50s the rest of us in the 60s, brightest weather around 4:00, low to mid 70s around the bay and coast upper 60s i should say upper 60s coast low to mid 70s bay and inland tomorrow rain for trick-or-treaters. san rafael you can see the fog swooped in tail lights disappearing south 101 towards civic center into central san rafael speeds a factor through the fog golden gate bridge not down on the span traffic flowing nicely there. bart, muni, caltrain all on time at this hour, great options if you are going to the parade tomorrow, mass transit is the key. drive out of antioch slow and go towards highway 242, typically slow in the antioch area.

[ inaudible ] 5:45. san mateo county sheriff's department is asking for the public's help locating a woman they say is responsible for stealing cars and then burglarizing the homes of victims. jennifer lee prince is wanted for questioning over the past several months investigators say she has broken into homes and stolen cars along the san mateo county coast. they say she is working with a man. anyone with information is urged to call the sheriff's

office. the woman accused of killing nursing student michelle le is headed to prison for a long time. a jury convicted giselle esteban of first degree murder yesterday. le disappeared in may 2011 her body was found four later. her family says it is good to have closure but it doesn't bring michelle back. >> for someone like that to be taken away is really hard. she took michelle's life. she took her life. that's for god to judge. >> giselle esteban will spend a minimum of 25 years in prison sentencing set for early december. oakland mayor quan says new report indicates the city is in its strongest fiscal position in a decade. the mayor says city revenues exceeded budget special tastes by almost 35 million dollars in the last quarter -- of the

5:50. we'll give you figures on sandy. the numbers were updated the storm has killed 18 people, that includes a crew member of the ship hms bounty, the captain is still missing at sea. 7 1/2 million are without power the number of homes destroyed in the raging fire in queens, was just updated to between 80 and 100. that's 80 and 100 homes almost double what was previously thought. this morning the american red cross is making appeal it urgently needs blood donations. to help make up for the blood loss they are planning numerous drives in the bay area this week. we'll tell you where to go, go to abc7news.com, click on see it on tv. see if maybe you can help. time for the weather forecast. mike is here. >> hard to see this morning
